The Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce is proud to be a collection site for the Sunrise Kiwanis Shoes for Kids Project. The Shoes for Kids Project collects new athletic shoes for children in pre-K through high school in the Charlotte County Public School System. The need for the 2026-2027 school year is 4,000 new pair of athletic shoes. I ask for you to please consider bringing in a pair, two pair, or 10 pair. No donation is too small or two large. There is a tremendous need for our youth in our community. Many children wear shoes that are duct-taped, too large or too small. There is nothing like a child getting a new pair of shoes and seeing their face light up. Their confidence builds, feel more included, and yes, their grades improve as well. It is an amazing experience to see when one chamber member, the Isles Yacht Club proudly awarded donations though their Isles Yacht Club Charitable Foundation to three other Charlotte County Chamber member nonprofit organizations; Peace River Wildlife Center, Crossroads Hope Academy, and C.A.R.E. after an exciting and highly successful Charity Cup season. Founded in 2025, the Isles Yacht Charitable Foundation hit the ground running; raising over $50,000 in its first year through spirited member participation, sponsorships, raffles, and community events. The Charity Cup has become one of the Isles Yacht Club’s most anticipated traditions, drawing 800-plus members into a yearlong lineup of tennis, pickleball, sailing regattas, bocce, billiards, table games, nautical poker runs, and more. Since 2003, members and sponsors have helped raise more than $923,000 for Charlotte County charities. “This is truly a club-wide effort,” said Frank Leyshon, Isles Yacht Club Commodore and board of directors liaison. “Our members have a blast competing, but even more meaningful is the impact we make together.” This year’s beneficiaries were Peace River Wildlife Center, rescuing and rehabilitating native Florida wildlife, Crossroads Hope Academy, providing a safe, supportive home for teen foster boys, and C.A.R.E., supporting survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and violent crimes Representatives from all three organizations joined members and sponsors at the Isles Yacht Club to celebrate the season’s success and the powerful partnerships that strengthen Charlotte County. “The members of the Isles Yacht Club continue to amaze me with their generosity and commitment to our community,” said Dannielle Miller, general manager of the Isles Yacht Club. “I am incredibly proud to serve as the general manager of such a loving and giving club,” Miller said. “The kindness and compassion our members show toward both the community and one another truly make the Isles Yacht Club special.” This is a powerful example of chamber organizations working together; one chamber member helping three others, demonstrating how collaboration builds stronger communities. It is an amazing experience to see when one chamber member, the Isles Yacht Club proudly awarded donations though their Isles Yacht Club Charitable Foundation to three other Charlotte County Chamber member nonprofit organizations; Peace River Wildlife Center, Crossroads Hope Academy, and C.A.R.E. after an exciting and highly successful Charity Cup season. Founded in 2025, the Isles Yacht Charitable Foundation hit the ground running; raising over $50,000 in its first year through spirited member participation, sponsorships, raffles, and community events. The Charity Cup has become one of the Isles Yacht Club’s most anticipated traditions, drawing 800-plus members into a yearlong lineup of tennis, pickleball, sailing regattas, bocce, billiards, table games, nautical poker runs, and more. Today is a time for reflection and gratitude. As we reflect on this Memorial Day, the Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce joins our community in honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day is more than the unofficial start of summer or a long holiday weekend; it is a solemn reminder of the courage, dedication, and selflessness of those who gave their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day. Across generations, American service members have answered the call to defend our nation and uphold the values of liberty and democracy. Their sacrifices have shaped our country and preserved opportunities for future generations. Memorial Day gives us the opportunity to pause, reflect, and express our deepest gratitude to those heroes and to the families who continue to carry their legacy. Here in Charlotte County, we are fortunate to live in a community that values patriotism, service, and unity. Charlotte County might just be it

On April 28, I had the distinct honor and privilege to participate in the Southwest Florida Honor Flight, Mission XXIV. The Southwest Honor Flight took 95 veterans to Washington D.C. for the entire day in recognition for their service, commitment, and sacrifice. For each Veteran, there was a Guardian who would accompany them throughout the day and share the impactful and inspiring experience with them. We had the pleasure to visit and tour Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Solider, Military Women’s Memorial, WWII Memorial, FDR Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Korea Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial. There were special Flag Ceremonies at various memorials recognizing and celebrating the veterans of those era’s. Our veterans are among the most special and precious members of our society. They have answered a call greater than themselves, putting duty, honor, and country above personal comfort and safety. Through sacrifice, resilience, and courage, they have protected the freedoms we often take for granted. Their stories carry lessons of bravery, unity, and unwavering commitment. Honoring them means more than words; it requires gratitude, support, and remembrance. We owe them respect, care, and lasting appreciation for everything they have given to defend our nation. Let us strive to honor their service and uphold the values they defended so proudly. For my last note, but certainly not least, I had the honor to be a Guardian to Don Rodgers, a retired 20-year veteran who served as a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy.
