The Junior Leadership Charlotte program (JLC) takes place over a nine-month period, bringing together twenty-eight eleventh-grade students in monthly day-long sessions that include leadership training, project planning and career opportunities, in addition to the history, culture, environment and other immense resources of the Charlotte County area.
The goal of the program is to enhance the students’ educational experiences and knowledge about local opportunities so that, ultimately, they will choose to live and work in Charlotte County and become the county’s future leaders.
Although the cost of providing the program is approximately $500 for each of the twenty-eight students, there is no cost to the students who are accepted into the program. JLC is organized and implemented by volunteers from the business community and funded by local businesses and individuals, including The Captain’s Table Restaurant; Charlotte County School Board; Dunn & Associates; Sam’s Fencing & Security; Webb, Lorah & Company, P.L.; Bon Secours-St. Joseph Hospital; Camp, Dresser & McKee, Inc.; Charlotte Herald-Tribune; Charlotte Sun; Clerk of the Court; Croy’s Cooling; Edison Community College; Five Star Realty; Koch & Company, CPAs, PA; Light Ideas, Inc.; Monty’s Restaurant; Peace River/Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority; South Port Square; Mr. and Mrs. Marvin E. Williams, Jr.; and our major sponsor, Sprint Yellow Pages.
This JLC program is one of the only programs in Florida offering this course of study to students at no charge, and application is open to every eleventh grade student in Charlotte County.
